KANDY PERAHERA PACKAGE (3D/2N)

The ideal add-on for our Sri Lanka Tours or as a standalone experience, the Esala Perahera Festival in Kandy is an event not to be missed. Lavishly decorated elephants, ceremonial dancers, and acrobats honor the Sacred Tooth Relic and the guardian gods Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama, and Pattini by colorful processions.
The Kandy Perahera is undoubtedly the largest cultural festival in the country. Also known as the Esala Perahera, thousands of people, both local and foreign visitors, come to Kandy to see the Perahera every August. As with most Peraheras, whip crackers take the vanguard position. They make loud cracking noises with their whips and traditionally, their symbolic function had been clearing the way. These whip crackers are followed by hundreds of drummers playing traditional beats, dancers performing traditional dances, and other amazing performances with fire, stilts, and other props. After the performers, the elephants decorated with velvets, gold, and silver carrying the Tooth Relic walk slowly keeping up with the pace of the procession.
Additionally, this holiday package includes visits to the dedicated Perahera temples (Devales) in the vicinity of the Temple of the Tooth, the Royal Botanical Gardens, a tea plantation, and, of course, a Kandy city sightseeing tour.
Should you arrive on an early flight, your driver will be happy to stop at the Elephant Orphanage (optional) for a visit on your way to Kandy.

We also can include the Kataragama Festival in the South-East on request. The Kataragama Perahera is dedicated to the Hindu God Skanda also known as Kataragama Deviyo. The route of the procession leads past various temples to the Temple of the aboriginal jungle goddess Valli Amman. Devotees of all religions, including the aboriginal Veddahs, join the festivities and cleanse themselves in the Menik River before making their offering to the shrine. The main attraction, besides the elephants, is the Hindu-themed Kavadi Dancing is the dance of the peacock, the vehicle of God Skanda. Fakir-like performances, such as pilgrims swinging on hooks pierced to their skin, rolling on hot sands, or walking over hot embers can also be seen.

KANDY PERAHERA 2022 PACKAGE ITINERARY

DAY 1:
From the airport, you will be traveling directly to your hotel in Kandy by private limousine transfer. Depending on your arrival time you can stop on the way to visit the Elephant Orphanage (optional).
The city of Kandy is host to the annual Esala Perahera, one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals, featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, and lavishly decorated elephants. This is held to celebrate Buddha's conception and his leaving of the family home many years later. The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days. The Sinhalese term 'Perahera' means a parade of musicians, dancers, singers, acrobats, and various other performers accompanied by a large number of caparisoned Tuskers and other elephants, parading the streets in celebration of a religious event.
In the evening your driver/guide will show you to the best view-point location for the Perahera route of the day. If requested he will also pick you up again at your convenience.

DAY 2:
After breakfast your driver will show you around Kandy city, with the option to visit the local markets and major sights. Later on you can watch the preparations for the evening Perahera around the Temple of the Tooth Relic. The "Devales' of Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini (Temples dedicated to the Gods associated with the festival) are situated in the vicinity of the Kandy Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth).
In the evening your driver / guide will show you to the best view-point location for the Perahera route of the day. If requested he will also pick you up again at your convenience.
Overnight at the Topaz Hotel Kandy 3* or the Tourmaline Hotel 4*

DAY 3:
After checking out of your hotel, you will visit the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, with over 60 hectares the largest botanic gardens in Sri Lanka. Highlights include a fine collection of orchids, an avenue of royal palms, the extraordinary, aptly named cannonball fruit tree and 40m-high Burma bamboo. Not to mention the giant Javan fig tree on the great lawn, with its colossal central trunk and umbrella-like canopy of branches.
On the way back to the airport, or your next destination in Sri Lanka, you can try some of the finest Ceylon Tea at an authentic and operating tea plantation.
