Serendip Stone Bungalow

Overview

Serendip Stone Bungalow is a refurbished colonial stone guesthouse which has been caringly revived by its owners, who maintained the old architectural features and infused them with contemporary design. Interiors are stylish with soothing neutral colours and cooling cement floors, wooden pillars and verandas and are decorated with juxtaposing traditional antiques and modern furniture. The property is set amongst gardens scattered with fruit trees, offering peace and tranquillity. Its vegetarian-meals only policy will delight many and may even give the doubters a chance for a different culinary experience. Relax in a planter’s chair on the veranda, soak in the Jacuzzi in the back garden, and at night dine under the stars surrounded by scented candles and oil lamps. Serendip is rented per room, but provides much privacy.

There are seven bedrooms – Saffron, Jasmin, Habarala, Jack Fruit, Araliya Shade, Mahaweli View and Sunshine – all with unique interiors. Rooms are furnished with an antique canopied double or twin bed fitted with mosquito netting and an ensuite bathroom with colour-infused cement rendering and a solar-powered h/w shower. The Sunshine suite is the most spacious and has a king-sized bed; Saffron and Jackfruit have an inter-connecting, and Mahaweli View and Araliya Shade are located at the front of the house and have the best views of the garden and river beyond.

Only vegetarian meals are served at the Serendip Stone Bungalow, prepared with fresh vegetables, herbs and spices from nearby villages. Sri Lankan rice and curries as well as western dishes are served in the garden or by the pool. Alcoholic beverages including wines and cocktails are available. The spacious lounge area opens out to the front veranda and has satellite TV, telephone and Wi-Fi. There is a small swimming pool with Jacuzzi at the back of the property.
